Dortmund Airport (DTM) Information: History and Facilities
The Dortmund Airport of today came into existence in 1960, after the nearby civil airfield at Brackel was relocated to the suburb of Wickede, on the site of the Dortmund Aviation Club. With established air traffic, it was not long until the airport became extremely busy and commercial flights began to steadily increase during the 1970s, when an asphalt runway was laid. At this stage, regular flights between Dortmund and Munich commenced, soon followed by flights to London, Stuttgart and Nuremberg.
The year of 1983 saw the opening of a new longer runway, measuring around 1,000 metres / 3,280 feet, extended further several years later. The year of 1990 marks an important year in the history of Dortmund Airport and Germany as a whole, when the reunification took place. This heralded a new era for air travel in Germany and Dortmund Airport began offering flights to Leipzig and Dresden, and soon after, the length of the runway was virtually doubled. More recently, in 1998, a large check-in building was built and just three years later, passenger numbers exceeded one million per year for the very first time.
Facilities at Dortmund Airport include three shops, with duty-free merchandise available at Travel Value and quality Belgian chocolates at Leonidas. Those looking for refreshments have several eateries to choose from, such as Bella Vista, Bon Voyage, Happy Landing and the Vamos bistro, on the departures level of Terminal A. Further facilities at Dortmund Airport include an information desk, travel agencies, WLAN Internet connections and conference rooms.
